CHAGALL IN HIGH FALLS
-
MARC CHAGALL AND SON, DAVID, ON MOHONK ROAD
From 1946 to 1948 Marc Chagall lived in High Falls. This small hamlet in the Hudson Valley of New York, gave Chagall the distance he need from New York City and its art and social scene but most important, it reminded him of his beloved Vitebsk, Russia. At home in the rural environment, with cow and farms, small wooden houses and rippling streams, Chagall found the catalyst for creativity after a difficult period following the death of his wife, Bella, and his narrow escape from Nazi Europe and the holocaust.
An exhibition recounting these critical years will take place from September 2 – October 30 in High Falls, at the Canal Museum Chapel on Mohonk Road, just two miles from where the Chagall house stands today. An OPENING RECEPTION will take place on Saturday, September 3 from 5 – 8 pm. Our special guest for the reception will be Bella Meyer, Marc Chagall’s granddaughter.
A BENEFIT DINNER will take place on Saturday, September 17 at 6:00pm at the Depuy Canal House. Tickets start at $125 per person and benefit the exhibition.

“Along the Hudson” is a photograph I took while at a Tai Chi retreat in Esopus, walking on the banks of the Hudson River. I was searching for heart shaped rocks, something I learned to do from a young friend named Ava who lives in High Falls.
